Awareness in meditation is described as sensing the mind-body to enable heightened appreciation of our internal and external self. We become more aware of the sensations that are happening in our minds and bodies.

Awareness Meditation helps to focus in the moment and overcome the influence of distractions.

Awareness is fundamental to meditation.

It guides you to self awareness and a profound and penetrating understanding of the self; how your mind works; and begins a journey of inquiry, understanding and knowing that is unparalleled. You know who you are and what you are doing as you are doing it.

Awareness Meditation is sometimes called ‘mindfulness’. You develop awareness of consciousness, sensing, thoughts, feelings. An appreciation and comprehension of the harmony between mind, body and spirit emerges from which is developed equanimity; a sense of calmness, presence of mind, assurance and self confidence.

Eric Harrison, a well known Perth meditation practitioner has written a nice article on Awareness Meditation for those who would like to read it.

A form of Awareness Meditation can be practiced by anyone – you can increase your awareness of your breath and of the tension you hold in your body through a simple body scan – a form of Awareness Meditation that I teach in my Meditation Workshops.

Energy For Life

Energy in the context of mind-body relationship and meditation, is the essence of life that exists in and around our bodies.

This energy ebbs and flows depending upon our state of mind.

In a well balanced mind-body this energy is maintained and restored through the deep rest and relaxation of meditation.

This energy can be described as vitality, enthusiasm for life, strength, stamina, drive, passion and zest.

It is the essence of wellbeing.

Authorities describe wellness as being multidimensional, involving physical, mental, social and emotional aspects that achieve a state of existence of positive health, exemplified by quality of life and a sense of wellbeing.

The ‘Wellness Warrior’ idea identifies five easy steps to achieving wellness and provides the foundation upon which you can build a sound energetic mind-body relationship:

Step 1 is related to your physical body -

Move – (exercise) every day

Step 3 also physically related but this time around food -

Nourish – eat quality food.

Steps 2, 4 and 5 are where I believe Meditation has a role to play -

2 – Sense – your body speaks to you through pain and discomfort and it is up to us to ‘hear’ what it is telling us, being ‘aware’ of your body will help you look after it better and it will reward you with wellness.

4 – Breathe – deeply to de-stress and detox mind-body.

5 – Relax – practice deep relaxation daily.

Meditation helps you become aware of the needs of both your mind and your body by helping you raise your level of awareness.

Taking the time to meditate?

Choosing the time to meditate?

Choosing how many times to meditate in a day? How long to meditate?

The important question to be answered is ‘Taking the time to meditate’. The remaining questions about time and meditation soon fall into place once you begin your practice.

Taking the time to learn and practice can only be decided by understanding the therapeutic, personal development, and spiritual benefits of meditation.

You will then find the time to learn and practice.

Dipping into meditation; achieving calmness, relaxation, awareness and knowing is the answer to the questions: why should I and where can I find the time to meditate?

Relaxation is a mind-body state that allows release of tension and enables a sense of rest and restoring optimal performance.

Meditation is a means of achieving this deep relaxation sometime referred to as “conscious relaxation” or “chosen relaxation”.

For many of us, relaxation means reading a good book, watching television, having a drink, an enjoyable meal with a friend or partner. While this is a form of relaxation it does not release the stress and tension accumulated through the impact of the toxic effects of stress on mind and body.

A Relaxation Meditation enables the mind-body to activate its natural relaxation response.

The Benson-Henry Institute of Mind Body Medicine describes the relaxation response as a physical state of deep rest that changes the physical and emotional response to stress. The relaxation response is used to combat the negative effects of stress.

It is a key factor in mind body medicine.

If practiced regularly, it can have lasting effects restoring and energising the mind-body bringing both into a state of balance, mind clear and body refreshed. After you subscribe to the right, leave a comment or response below.

Meditation – Simply Breathing

Calming The Chaos Meditation Studio teaches that Simple Meditation – built on the practice of Breath Meditation is an easy way to learn and understand the meditation experience.

In this Guide To Simple Meditation Series you will learn that awareness of the breath is the foundation of most, if not all, meditation techniques.

The breath is the means by which the body is refreshed and revitalised every moment of our lives.

The breath tells so much about our feelings.

Shorter, quicker breathing generally means we are under some form of physical and/or mental stress.

Physical exertion will affect our breathing and so will tension caused by emotional responses to our thoughts. An extreme emotional response could involve anger or fear.

In meditation it is helpful to understand that the breath is closely connected with the physical and mental states of the body.

Practice becoming aware of your breath thoughout the day. Notice when it becomes short and sharp and see if it is reflecting your feelings, your emotional response or your feelings of stress in any given moment. Quiet, deep, even breathing is generally a sign of relaxation.

This Guide To Simple Meditation outlines the philosophy and approach taken to teaching and learning meditation through Calming The Chaos Meditation Studio

Meditation is about learning to intuitively be aware of the relationship between breath, body and mind.

This awareness enables the breath to be used as a vehicle to calm the mind and relax the body. It can be used to de-stress quickly and safely.

Sometimes, the practice of meditation can seem confusing and we can convince ourselves that it is impossible to remember what we are supposed to be doing.

This simple memory aid to using the breath in meditation reminds us of the value of the breath and its use for calming, relaxing and energising mind and body.
