Seniors’ Meditation Program a Success
Recognising that meditation and its benefits are complementary to good health by helping to release stress and encourage relaxation, the Victorian Department of Planning and Community Development (DPCD) Victoria Bushfire Appeal Fund funded FREE meditation tuition for seniors in Indigo Shire and surrounding areas in 2011. 11 classes were conducted between February and November with 82 people learning basic meditation.
The program was organised through the Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre and classes were conducted in Beechworth, Rutherglen, Yackandandah and Stanley.
The program was conducted by Ed, himself a senior and a resident of Stanley. He has practiced and studied mediation for 30 years and holds a Certificate in Meditation Facilitation from the Australian Nature Care College. Ed is also a member of the Australian Teachers of Meditation Association and has been teaching in the local area for the past three years.
The program encouraged a daily wellbeing regime of nourishing the body with good food, exercise, breathing, relaxation and sensing the mind and body.
The success of the seniors’ program has seen the commencement of regular weekly group sessions for people interested in continuing their meditation practice. For further information click on the link below.
The Beechworth Neighbourhood Centre has an extensive program of activity for all ages. A Buddhist Meditation program is being conducted by Helen Rivero during February and March. Contact the Neighbourhood Centre on 03 5728 2386 for more information.
